Federal Release Paths Near Barren
The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs the federal prison system. Its locator mainly covers federal inmates released after 1982. A person with a Barren connection appears only if federal authorities created the relevant record. There is no Barren County federal prison to call as a local facility.
A BOP result with a past Release Date and Location “RELEASED” means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not show that federal supervision ended. It also does not rule out later custody by Kentucky, a county jail, ICE, or another agency.
Confirm a Federal Inmate Release
Use the official BOP Inmate Locator. A known BOP, FBI, INS, or DCDC number is the strongest search key. A name search can be narrowed with middle initial, race, age, and sex.
- Search by federal identifier when known, or by full name.
- Match the register number and personal descriptors.
- Read both Release Date and Location.
- Treat a future date as projected.
- Treat “UNKNOWN” as no BOP-determined term.
- Verify later custody or supervision through the responsible agency.
The Barren County release search should be used instead when the person was held only by the county or Kentucky DOC.
BOP Release Date Meanings
The BOP explains the result labels on its records information page.
| Display | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Past date and RELEASED | No longer in BOP custody |
| Future Release Date | Projected BOP release date |
| UNKNOWN | BOP has not determined the term |
| IN TRANSIT | Movement may involve the Marshals Service |
The image below comes from that official explanation.

Its wording supports a narrow finding about BOP custody, not all custody or supervision.
Barren Federal Court Custody
The U.S. Marshals Service handles federal pretrial and court custody, often through contract housing. No public USMS historical release locator was confirmed. A person may be shown in BOP as “IN TRANSIT,” then be removed by USMS and released by a court without a later BOP update.
For that path, obtain the federal court release order and contact the actual housing jail. The order explains judicial authority. The housing facility can confirm physical departure. If BOP sentence custody never began, waiting for a final BOP result may fail.
Federal Release Record Requests
BOP FOIA is the records fallback, subject to privacy and authorization limits. Request a specific release or custody record, identify the person and register number, and state the relevant date range. Earlier federal records may require the National Archives.
BOP has no local Barren office listed for this task. Its public locator and FOIA route are system contacts. A transfer named in a Barren release sheet should be followed to the receiving federal agency rather than described as community release.
Federal Sentence Release Evidence
A federal sentence record can contain several dates, and only the completed custody record resolves the BOP event. A future date remains projected. A past date paired with “RELEASED” establishes departure from BOP custody. Neither display answers whether probation, supervised release, a detainer, or another sovereign's case remained active.
Federal supervised release is imposed by a federal court and administered through the federal probation system. It is not Kentucky parole and should not be routed to the Glasgow office. The judgment and federal docket identify the term. Use those records instead of reading “RELEASED” as the end of every obligation.
USMS Custody Is Not BOP
The U.S. Marshals Service moves and holds people for federal court. Contract detention can place a federal prisoner in a local jail even when BOP has no sentence record. That does not turn the housing jail into a federal prison or guarantee later BOP custody.
For a federal court release, check the docket or release order, the actual housing jail's departure record, and any receiving agency. No public USMS historical release locator was confirmed. BOP warns that an “IN TRANSIT” person might be removed by USMS and released by a court without another BOP notice. A stale transit display needs court and facility follow-up.
Barren County Federal Transfers
A person leaving Barren's current list may have bonded out, completed time, moved to Kentucky DOC, or entered federal or immigration custody. The list does not identify the event. Request the Barren release sheet with the date, time, authority, and destination fields.
If it names USMS, use the federal docket and housing-facility path. If it names BOP, use the federal locator. If it names ICE, switch to ODLS. The custodian named by the source record controls the next search. A transfer remains custody until the receiving system documents a later release.
Older Federal Release Records
BOP's locator primarily reaches people released from 1982 forward. Earlier records may require the National Archives. Search by register number when possible and retain the exact result labels. Privacy limits and incomplete identifiers can prevent a fast match.
A focused FOIA request should identify the person, register number, record type, and date range. Ask for an existing release record rather than a new narrative. A no-record response should prompt a USMS and court check, especially when the person may never have served a BOP sentence.
Federal and Kentucky Records Differ
KOOL, Kentucky DOC Daily Releases, and Kentucky VINE cover state or participating local records. They do not replace BOP. Conversely, BOP cannot confirm a county bond release or Kentucky discharge. A negative search in the wrong system says little.
Build the custody sequence from source records. Begin with the holding agency, identify each transfer, then end with the system reporting completed departure. This preserves the difference between release from one custodian and release from all custody.
Read Federal Result Dates Carefully
The locator's date should be recorded with the status shown at the same time. A date without Location can be misread. Future dates can change through sentence recalculation, court action, credit, or another federal decision. Past dates establish the BOP departure only when the result also identifies the person and no-longer-in-custody location.
Middle initials and federal numbers help separate similar names. Compare age, race, sex, and register number without assuming that one matching field proves identity. If the record is incomplete, use the docket, judgment, and facility record to resolve the custody chain.
No Federal Prison in Barren
No federal prison was confirmed within Barren County. The custody-network page exists because a local arrest, detainer, or conviction can lead into a federal system. It must not be used to imply that BOP operates the county detention center.
The local jail remains the source for its own departure record. Federal court controls its release orders. USMS controls court custody, and BOP controls federal sentence records. Keeping those roles separate avoids sending a request to an agency that never held the responsive record.
Federal Date Cross-Checks
When systems show different dates, compare the event tied to each one. A county transfer date, federal court order date, BOP projected date, and completed BOP release date can all be valid while answering different questions. Record the custodian and event with every date, then use the last verified agency to continue the custody trail.
